Robert Sargent Shriver, born Nov. 19, 1915, in Westminster, the father of former California first lady Maria Shriver, died at a Maryland hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 18, of complications due to Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Shriver served two administrations of social awareness, launching the Peace Corps for his brother in law, President John F. Kennedy, and directed the war against poverty to President Lyndon Johnson.
Maria Shriver often highlighted her family's deeply personal and painful experiences with Alzheimer's. She serves as on the advisory board of the Sargent Shriver Peace Institute, which offers training programs in public service.
"He was a man of giant love, energy, enthusiasm, and commitment. He lived to make the world a more joyful, faithful, and compassionate place. He centered everything on his faith and his family…. He loved God, he loved Eunice, he loved us, he loved anyone who was a servant of peace, justice or joy. He loved life." Shriver's family said in a statement.
Mr. Shriver married Eunice Kennedy Shriver - the sister of John, Robert and Edward Kennedy.
