Elizabeth Edwards, a successful author and a driving force behind the political career of her husband John Edwards former presidential candidate before he was devastated by his infidelity, died Tuesday at the age of the 61st Edwards died of cancer at his home Chapel Hill, North Carolina, surrounded by her family, the family said in a statement.

John Edwards was defeated in the primaries and seven months after announcing on television that he had an extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter, a video producer whom he met during his campaign.
