Catherine Zeta Jones Has Reportedly Hospitalized for Bipolar Disorder II

Catherine Zeta-Jones decided to check into a mental health center for a short stay to treat her bipolar disorder II at a Connecticut mental health facility. A representative confirmed Wednesday.

Bipolar disorder, also called bipolar affective disorder or manic depression, is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally high levels of energy, cognition and mood, with or without one or more depressive episodes.

Treatments for bipolar II, usually include drugs and psychotherapy. In general, bipolar II patients may be hospitalized due to interventions of treatment does not work and the time away from stress factors are required to change plans or drug treatment. David J. Miklowitz, PhD, a professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine said "People notice a change, but it's not extreme."

Zeta-Jones married to actor Michael Douglas, who was diagnosed with throat cancer last year and announced in January that is cancer free after chemotherapy and radiation.
