Cassy Herkelman | The First Female Compete in The Iowa State Wrestling Tournament

The first two girls, Cassy Herkelman and Megan Black made history to compete in the Iowa state wrestling tournament. There has never been a girl competitor in the 85-years that the tournament has taken place and Cassy Herkleman won her first round, easily.

Cassy Herkelman is the first woman to win a tournament game in Iowa high school. Herkelman won the match reserved. Her opponent, Joel Northrup refused to wrestle her. Northrup was 35-4 on this season, and one of a state’s top wrestlers in weight class.

Northrop issued a statement in which he was careful to say he respected Herkelman but that wrestling her would go against his faith.

Cassy’s dad, Bill Herkelman says he “understands and respects” Joel Northrup choice.

Northrup said via a statement, "As a matter of conscience and my faith I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner."
